One two-month cruise around the Australian Coast is being halted days after the fatal incident of an elderly woman who was left behind by the ship on a distant coastal location.

The passenger had been walking on Lizard Island with other travelers from the Coral Adventurer, but broke off from the group for a pause. The vessel sailed away leaving her and returned later that day after the crew realised the lady was not present.

A major rescue mission found her person the following day.

Authorities are examining the event, in coordination with police and the medical examiner.

Head of the cruise operator said that travelers and staff on the vessel were notified that the continuation of the voyage had been called off due to the "unfortunate death and previous mechanical issues".

Via official communication, he added that travelers would be provided a complete reimbursement, and said the organization was working "to coordinate the homeward trips of the individuals via chartered flights".

Officials also released an updated statement, and said they had "issued a order to the Captain" banning any additional guests from entering the ship.

The official said that they would visit the ship in Cairns upon its return.

The vessel initially left Cairns on 24 October, and was merely two days into the voyage at the time of the elderly woman's death. The remote island was the opening port on the voyage.

Guests on the ship - who generally pay substantial amounts of dollars to take part in the voyage - were transported there for a daily excursion with the choice of trekking or snorkelling.

The offspring of the elderly passenger said that her relatives was "shocked and grieved that the vessel left the island after an scheduled outing without my parent".
